The next 2 images incorporate paintings rendered quite a few years ago.
I have 'framed ' them by drawing with beeswax crayons that I made, as well as oil bar, then I fused them with heat and polished to harden. I attached a small frame on the back so they look like they are suspended from the wall and have a tapestry-like quality that I am liking.

  1. I am very excited about these pieces and the addition of the 'drawn elements'. I especially like the "framed" ones as you might expect. So why does the matt/frame/border areas have to be boring? These are so cool. One element accentuates the other. You did this to a piece back in February. Since then I've been holding smaller pieces in front of larger pieces and thinking, "hmmmm". A very cool idea indeed.

  2. You know, I really really like that first piece, with the floral notations, and the colors. Bravo.

  3. I keep coming back to look at these. Your energy and handling of line come screaming through each one. I am especially drawn to the extreme horizontal one. It's subdued but somehow bubbling with pent up action.

I just noticed your "Recommended Reading" in the sidebar. What a great idea! The Portland Art Museum only has 2 Fairfield Porter paintings and they are not good examples of his work. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Thanks for elaborating on my comment about critique on Katherine's site. I find it a very interesting subject. So much can be learned or explored with a good one. Adjusting your thinking to include your own initial impulse with what was pointed out to you as a weakness. Once seen, the weakness is difficult to avoid. Think of how much we could all learn from each other if it was considered more open...

Nice work. I've never noticed encaustic as a mixed media. It works very well and creates some passionate pieces. I really like how the red flowers dance so brilliantly on the gray ground. Very nice.

  5. Wow Bill thanks i really am excited by your response(s)-!
Yes i've always been interested in the 'frame' so we are kindred spirits-years ago I was making encaustic tapestries by embellishing image icons with textiles, found objects etc..don't know if i am re-examining that or not-have been working a lot at night and i seem to be in a different groove-will see where it takes me

  6. Thanks Katherine-actually that long one has a lot of reflective light bouncing around-a happy 'mistake'-i had picked up a small mirror that i decided not to incorporate but needed something quick to press in and flatten the wax and picked up the mirror-the encaustic's adhesive qualities 'pulled' bits of mirror-it was fabulous!!! I repeated the 'pulls' throughout the whole thing and it now has a beautiful subtle silver shimmer moving throughout the work.
