Winter Moons

I was painting in the studio today and time got away from me so didn’t get out for a walk until the sun went down. The fresh air was quite brisk and it was invigorating to be out in it after such a long day. I love how the fields look this time of night-full of mystery! On one side of the field the sky held smokey clouds highlighted in crimson and yellow from the just-departed sun, and on the other side was a full bright moon in a luminous blue haze.

When I got back I made these little paintings on small canvases that were primed with aluminum pigment. I worked with hardly any paint, mostly dry-brushing and wiping out passages to reveal the reflective aluminum. It’s difficult to photograph works on reflective surfaces and one can’t see the nuances in tone but I’m quite pleased. I think that I will work larger on the same surfaces-if I ever finish current  paintings that I have on the go!

  1. Oooh! I like the effect of the aluminum poking through! I really enjoy the texture on the top piece, too!

  3. Do you know what colours you used Jan? lovely tonal works you have captured the night so well. I was also out walking on Wednesday night it was incredible how bright the moon was, casting such a fine light everywhere. Yesterday I saw the sky mostly pale blue then as it got darker and darker there was some yellow and pinks about the sky area close to the moon. Plenty of inspiration for us all!

  4. thanks all for taking the time to comment

re the aluminum pigment-it is very easy to apply. i purchase the powder at Kama pigments in Montreal and they do ship, however it can probably be found at any supplier for hand made paints-

i mix it with 3/4 acrylic gloss medium and some water-you can probably use matte medium but i like the feel of my paint on the slicker surfaces. The aluminum lessens the porosity of the canvas yet leaves the tooth-and i like the way the paint glides on top of it

i am going to experiment re mixing with oil mediums-i also think it would make a nice surface to draw on

the downside is that it is very fine powder and a mask should be used when mixing

Caroline as far as pallet i used left over paint from my day-i use indigo when i make my greys and usually mix it for browns this time of year with red oxide and/or alizarine crimson-used ultramarine for the skies and a wee wee wee bit of Indian yellow in the whites of the moon-as i said i wiped a lot of the pigment off and that left a pinkish tint from the browns

hey Sheila good to hear from you-just had a look at your pastel nudes..always loved your drawing--really like your current image against the red!

Hi Krista thanks -in this case it was instant memory -easier than long term for me lately
